If by "pounds" you are referring to the English Pound Sterling (aka pound), then that will depend on the exchange rate.
Though the Euro is still widely in use in Europe, including UK, the Pound sterling is the worlds oldest currency still in use today. It is also the fourth most commonly traded currency.
Again, your question however, does not have a single answer, as it fluctuates with the exchange rate on any given day, or time (depending how often those rates are calculated.
If you are asking how many pennies (U.S. cents) in a pound (16 ounces) - when pennies were all copper the answer would be 145; there would be 181 copper-plated zinc pennies and 168 steel pennies (minted in 1943, with a few minted by mistake in 1944) in a pound. Considering wear and tear, your quantity may vary.
In the UK, the smallest unit of currency is 1 penny. It's usually written as 1p. There is 100p in 1 pound sterling (written as £1). In the UK, the plural of pennies is pence, so the pound is made up of 100 pence.
The current decimal system has 100 pennies (pence, known in 1971 as new pence) in the British Pound Sterling; for 905 years prior to decimalisation, there were 12 pence to the shilling, and 20 shillings to the pound, making 240 pennies in a pound. See http://projectbritain.com/moneyold.htm for further explanation.
This site bears out my father's recollection from World War II that pennies could be converted to pounds by weighing them!
