Why does Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road" end with the sound of a dog barking in rhythm?

Because it's the dog Clark left leashed to the bumper. The cop played by Stacy Keach, ( tearfully) says something like "poor little guy probably kept up for the first few miles. I'm gonna go back and get the rest of the carcass off the road". Just a guess.

The dog barking was part of the song and, coincidentally, fitted into the movie.

Those dog barks were a whim I added at the song's end, not knowing there was a pivotal dog scene in the film. When director Harold Ramis heard it, he was amazed. Wonderful synchronicity!
