Hiroo Onoda, I remember the news when he finally surrendered. It was not long after another soldier had finally surrendered.

According to wikipedia
Only Private Teruo Nakamura, arrested on 18 December 1974 in Indonesia, held out longer.

wikipedia.org/Teruo_Nakamura tells of this person, born under the rule of the Japanese in Taiwan, who was the last known member of the Imperial Japanese Army to be brought in from their guerilla warfare. Nakamura was not ethnically Japanese but volunteered for military service (unlike quite a few others who were conscripted). Unlike Onoda, he was at first not welcomed by the Republic of China, but after outcry because he was ineligible for a Japanese pension, he became more popular and received financial support from the government and public donation. He died in 1979. The wording of the question could be takem to either mean the last ethnic Japanese person, or the last member of the Japanese forces. biguywaco has taken it one way - I'm taking it the other for completeness of answer.
