The word "tragedy" is generally agreed to come from two ancient Greek words: "tragos" ("goat") and "ode" ("song"), the latter pronounced "oh-day". "Goat-song" has been variously taken to mean that tragedy came from satyr-drama, performed by men costumed as goats, or that it was performed at a festival "at the goat" (at the sacrifice of a goat), or that the prize was a goat (thus "for a goat"), or even that the performers were ephebes doing their two years (18-20) of public service. This included performing at the public festivals. Young men were nicknamed "goats", the way we use "kids" for children.
