At school I was taught in the UK in classrooms with scrolling blackboards. When did these start to replace fixed blackboards and what were they made of?

I remember using one to teach in Australia, in the early 1970s. It was a canvas-like material with blackboard paint, so you could write and scroll, and only needed to erase when you had rolled it back to the start.

The Secondary school (11-16 y.o.) I went to in the late Seventies mainly had scrolling blackboards. My Junior School (7-10 y.o) did not, but it was a slightly older building.
