Apples come from Asia and cuttings and seeds were brought to the Americas by Europeans. Initially apples were used to produce cider. Cross-pollination led to many thousands of new apple varieties.

John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) helped spread the different varieties of apple that emerged and this folklore made apples American.

The first apple pie recipe dates back to England in the 14th century. The pastry crust was inedible and served as a container.

No one definitive origin exists for the "as American as apple pie" expression. However, by World War II, American soldiers were apt to say they were fighting for "mom and apple pie".
