The very first actual Gold record was awarded to Perry Como on March 14, 1958 for "Catch A Falling Star". This award was given out for records that sold at least 500,000 units. The first album to achieve this was actually Glenn Miller's "Chattanooga Choo Choo" released in 1942 which sold over 1 million copies. So it was retroactively given the Gold award.
