The Pastry War started because a French pastry chef accused the Mexican army of damaging his restaurant near Mexico City. Due to civil unrest at the time, other foreign governments also had grievances with Mexico. The French brought troops to enforce their demands. While Santa Anna was able to defend the area, he did lose a leg in the process.
