Without gravity pulling on the spinal cord an astronaut can gain as much as 3% in height. So a 6-foot-tall person might gain 2 inches (180 cm tall would gain 3.6 cm) while in space! Once back on the ground, the astronaut will soon lose the gain in height and be at an increased risk for herniated disks.
