Seven of the craters within the Apollo basin on the moon have been named after the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the Challenger explosion.
After the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28,1986, seven craters on the eastern rim of the Apollo basin were named after the crew members: Gregory Jarvis, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnick, Dick Scobee, and Michael Smith.
