The general idea of the public is that airplanes use GPS to navigate. However, airplanes, particularly large transport category models, use several navigation systems to go from place A to place B. At the heart of the navigation system is the Inertial Reference System (IRS). Then comes the GPS and other navigational aids such as the VOR (Very High-frequency Omni Directional Range), DME (Distance Measuring Equipment), NDB (Non-Directional Beacon), etc.
