Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does Margaret have any brothers or sisters?

Answer: Yes, a brother

For a long time, we believe that Margaret is the only child of the Hales, however, we later discover that she has a brother, Frederick. The Hales do not talk about him, as he is in hiding from the law, after being involved in a mutiny at sea.
2. What two places does the title, "North and South" refer to?

Answer: Milton and Helstone

Milton is the town in the north that the Hales travel to, and is where they live for the majority of the program, and is thought to be based on Manchester. Though Margaret does spend some time in her Aunt's house in London, the village in the south that she considers home is Helstone, where she lived as a child.
3. What is the name of Edith's child?

Answer: Sholto

Gaskell gives the baby quite an unusual Gaelic name that we hear repeatedly when Edith is present, "You musn't go, Sholto would cry so".
4. What was the name of Margaret Hale's mother before she married?

Answer: Miss Beresford

Miss Dixon is the name of the Hales' servant, and Aunt Shaw is the married name of Mrs Hale's sister. The correct answer is Miss Beresford - in the film we hear the name when Dixon is thinking back to the first time she met her mistress, and she says that she was then "the young Miss Beresford".
5. Where is Aunt Shaw and Cousin Edith's house in London?

Answer: Harley Street

We hear several times in the film that Aunt Shaw's house is in Harley Street - for example, when Margaret has inherited Mr Bell's fortune, and Edith says, "I'm so glad she decided to stay with us in Harley Street, even though now she's quite the heiress," Grosvenor and Regent Street are other famous roads in London, but are not referred to, and Milton is, of course, the town where Margaret goes to live in the North, but is not linked to London.
6. Who played the two main roles in this adaptation, of Miss Hale and Mr Thornton.

Answer: Daniella Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage

The parts of Margaret Hale and John Thornton are played excellently by Daniella Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage. Sinead Cusack and Brendan Coyle also act in this adaptation, equally brilliantly playing the parts of Thornton's mother and Mr Higgins.
7. What is the name of Thornton's mill?

Answer: Malborough Mill

Though the mill is often referred to as "Thornton's Mill", its actual name is in fact Malborough Mill.
8. Which flower is a symbol throughout the film?

Answer: A yellow rose

Yellow roses are the flowers connected with Helstone. At the very beginning of the series, Margaret carries a yellow rose with her when she is leaving Helstone for Milton as a fading momento of her past life. As time passes the new parson gets rid of the roses to make room for his children to play, showing Margaret how time has passed and life in Helstone has changed, "happy as we were, we can't go back". Only Thornton can find a rose still hidden in the hedgerow when he visits the village.
9. Which mill does Nicholas Higgins originally work at?

Answer: Hamper's

Slickson and Henderson are two other mill owners in Milton, but none of the main characters ever work for them. Bessy and Nicolas Higgins both work at Hamper's to start with, however Hamper hasn't installed a machine called "a wheel" at his mills. "A wheel" sucks in some of the cotton waste that floats around the mills, to prevent the workers from breathing it in, keeping their lungs healthier. Bessy gets, "fluff on the lungs", which eventually kills her, from working here, so her father sends her to Thornton's, where there is "a wheel".

However, by the end, Nicholas too moves to Thornton's, when no other mill owner is willing to risk hiring him, after he encouraged the strike.
10. What is the name of Nicholas Higgins' younger daughter?

Answer: Mary

Bessy is Nicholas' older daughter. Mary is the name of her younger sister. After Bessy's death, Mary, "comes into her own", doing small jobs for the Hale family, and eventually becoming the cook for the workers at Thornton's mill.
