Where did German chocolate cake originate?

Would you believe Dallas, Texas? Mrs. George Clay submitted it to The Dallas Morning News for their "Recipe of the Day" in 1953. The chocolate that Mrs. Clay used was made by a baker named Samuel German thus giving us "German's Chocolate Cake." The 's was dropped giving us the current name.
