Brunei's official language is Standard Malay. The vernacular is Brunei Malay and Brunei English.

Arabic is termed a foreign language, along with English and several Chinese variants.

Brunei's official religion is Islam. As the language of the Quran, Arabic is used by Islamic scholars, plus Muslims have some proficiency. Arabic is taught in schools in the country.
