Paternoster lakes are formed when glaciers recede. The lake's formation resembles an indentation from a rosary bead and thus the name paternoster for the Our Father. The Wikipedia link has some great aerial pictures of the Paternoster Lakes highlighting the beaded look with water connecting one lake to the next.
