Two of the biggest problems with keeping a mantis shrimp in a glass tank are first they have a powerful enough punch to break the glass. It is the method the shrimp uses to kill prey. Second, the shrimp apparently love to beat on their enclosures.
Add to this the shrimp are very aggressive and do not make good aquarium mates with other animals. Then there are their incredibly powerful eyes that allow them to see in color and easily outside of a glass tank. So the shrimp can perceive threats they can see outside the tank. Finally, they need a decent bit of area to live so at least 10 gallons are necessary to keep them them from being stressed.
