Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The M4 Sherman was considered a heavy tank for the time.

Answer: False

The latest model of the Sherman weighed in at only 35.5 tons, putting it in the medium class of tank. At the time, classification was determined by role of the tank. However, if one looked at the weight of the tank and its main ordnance one could use that as well.
2. How big was the largest Tank gun put on the M4?

Answer: 105mm

The interesting thing was that this tank started out with a 75mm, went to a 76mm, then finally toward the end of the war models where coming out with the 105mm. This gun was put on the M4IB or M4A6 around 1943.
3. The Tog II heavy tank that never got beyond the trial stage was designed by which country?

Answer: Britain

This brute weighted at almost 90 tons with a 75/76mm main gun. As heavies go though it was a heavyweight amoung heavyweights (compared to the M26A2's 60 tons and the King Tiger at almost 79 tons.) However, it never went beyond the trial stage.
4. The heaviest World War II tank was named what?

Answer: Maus

Despite its name, which means 'mouse' in German, this bruiser weighed 188 tons with the turret alone weighing 50 tons. In fact the Germans had to build special railway cars to haul it around and the ammo weighed over 150 lbs each and had to carried by trailer. Only two production models were made, both being destroyed.
5. The T-70 light tank belonged to which country?

Answer: Soviet Union

This was the heaviest of the Soviet light tanks. It weighed out at only 9 tons. It replaced the T-60, but because of the lend/lease program only 120 were made.
6. What was the lightest light tank used in the WWII?

Answer: A4EII

This was the lightest because it was amphibious weighting in at only 2.17 tons.
It belonged to Britain.
7. The Char2 belong to what country?

Answer: France

This was France's main heavy tank with the latest model having a 155mm main gun. The latest model, the -2 bis, weighed out at 68 tons with a speed of just over 7 mph.
8. The Japanese heavy tank type 5 Chi Ri had what size secondary gun?

Answer: 37 mm

The Chi Ri was Japan's main battle tank with a 75mm main gun. Interesting foot note: the water cooled engine was of German design.
9. On the M13/40 and M14/41 Italian tanks, how long was training given to the crew?

Answer: 25 days

Believe it or not on top of the 25 day training the crews only drove it 2 hours as part of their training before being sent out! Now, which one of these pedals was the clutch again?
10. The P26/40 Italian heavy tank was never issued to the Italian army.

Answer: True

Produced by Fiat they were designed to accompany their medium tanks in support. But because the production types didn't roll out until 1943 none was issued to the army. Germany did use a few in the Anzio campaign.
