Found in the country's North Island, New Zealand's third-longest river (290 km / 180 mi) has the same legal status as a human being, granted in 2017.
“The reason we have taken this approach is because we consider the river an ancestor and always have,” said Gerrard Albert, the lead negotiator for the Whanganui iwi [tribe].

The effect of this is that the river can be represented in court and guardians appointed to speak for it.
