Lake Maracaibo is the largest lake in South America. It is located in Venezuela and covers an area of approximately 13,210 square kilometres (5,100 square miles).
Lake Titicaca covers an area of approximately 8,372 square kilometres (3,232 square miles). It is located at a high altitude in the Andes, and parts of it extend into both Peru and Bolivia.
Lake Maracaibo is actually larger in size; however, it cannot officially be classified as a lake since it is connected to the Caribbean Sea. Lake Titicaca also has the distinction of being the highest lake in the world, at an elevation of 12,500 feet above sea level.
