Would you believe at the Summer Olympics in London! From 1912 to 1948 competitors could win medals for the arts of architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture. The IOC decided in 1949 that they would no longer give medals for the arts and stick to athletic competitions only. Interestingly, some of the categories did not have a gold medal or silver medal winner but did have a bronze medal winner. I guess they had a standard and if an artwork was not outstanding it did not win the gold by default.
