Ruth St. Denis was a pioneer in the art of modern dance. She started as a practitioner of Delsarte poses which were designed to display the beauty of the human body. In the late 1800s and early 1900s there was a huge push in America for temperance, so her desire to free women to express themselves went against the culture.
St. Denis was the co-founder in 1915 of the American Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts. She taught notable performers including Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey. In 1938, she founded the pioneering dance program at Adelphi University. She published several articles on spiritual dance and the mysticism of the body.
