Well, this was the occasion that became known as Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, slaves were told that they were now free. About 250,000 enslaved people were so informed. This date was some two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth has been a US public holiday since 2021 when President Biden signed the bill making it a law.
