It happened in Swansea, presently the second-largest city in Wales. A cargo of copper ore from Cuba was unloaded on 15 September 1865, during a heat wave. Traveling with the ore were a few mosquitoes infected with the yellow fever virus, and when the ship docked they flew into Swansea. This started an epidemic that lasted through early October.
