In 1882 Queen Victoria's son-in-law, the Marquess of Lorne (who was the Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883), recommended Alberta for a district of the then much larger North-West Territories in honour of his wife, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1905, when part of the NWT was segregated into provinces, Alberta became a province (as did Saskatchewan, also carved out of the NWT). Lake Louise was also named for her in 1882.
