Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who attempted to assassinate the Queen?

Answer: Edward Oxford

The scene opens with Edward Oxford smearing what I guess to be red paint all over a photo of the Queen in the Gazette. On the route from the palace to the Duchess of Kent's home, Oxford fired his first shot from a closed carriage. A horseman was wounded although no blood was seen. Albert ordered the way cleared and to drive on.

The next thing that happens is Oxford is literally inches away from the Queen. Albert shoves her aside to save her and slaps Oxford with his whip/stick.
2. Who was owed a tenner at Princess Vicky's birth?

Answer: Lord Uxbridge

Apparently there was bet between Lord Uxbridge and The Duke of Wellington whether it would be a prince. The Duke apparently said it would be a prince and lost the bet.
3. The Duchess of Kent suggested naming the newborn princess after the Queen.

Answer: False

The Queen: "Next time it will be a prince."
Albert: "Victoria!"
The Queen: "We must have a son - it's our duty."
Albert: "The devil with duty. She's beautiful."
The Queen: "Good gracious what a grip."
Albert: "No doubts about the name...Victoria."
4. Following the princess' birth, who was put in charge of the household?

Answer: The Prince

A young boy between the age of ten and thirteen had broken into the palace through an unlocked window. He stole food, listened at doors and even saw the princess asleep in her cradle. He was able to describe the nursery exactly. The Queen then put Albert in charge of the household seeing how Lehzen was in charge of the nursery.
5. Where was Frederick Standish appointed as ambassador to?

Answer: Vienna

To avoid a problem between the Queen and the newly elected Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, Freddy was appointed as ambassador to Vienna. This meant he wouldn't have to ask for Lady Henrietta 'Hetty' Standish being dismissed from the Queen's staff.
6. Following Lehzen's dismissal, Christmas trees were brought from Germany.

Answer: True

He had a series of at least six possibly more Christmas trees on carts that came all the way from Thuringia, Germany. After chasing Albert disguised as a bear the family sang "Silent Night" in German.
7. Who designed the building that would house The Great Exhibition?

Answer: Joseph Paxton

Joseph Paxton proposed the trees inside the building, 16 acres of ground, 4,500 tons of steel and 293,655 panes of glass. This building later came to be known as "The Crystal Palace".
