Booker T Washington in 1901 was a guest of Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy had dined with several African Americans while he was the governor of New York without comment by the public. However, as president, the event caused a massive outcry by many white politicians, especially in the South. Unfortunately, this backlash resulted in it being another 30 years before another African American was invited to dine at the White House.
