When did the martial art of Karate make its Olympic debut?

Karate made its first appearance at the Tokyo Games in 2020. The competition was for both men and women with athletes being divided by weight. Also, there was a competition called kata which was an evaluation of technique rather than fighting.

Sadly, karate will not be included in the 2024 and 2028 games.
