Her unwavering dedication to hockey paid off, and in 1996 she attended the Atlanta Olympics with the Australian Hockeyroos. In the final game they faced South Korea, winning 3-1, and Peris became the first Aboriginal person to win an Olympic gold medal.
Nova Peris became the first Aboriginal to win an Olympic gold medal when she was a member of victorious Hockeyroos in Atlanta 1996. She also become the first Mother to be a gold medalist for Australia since Shirley Strickland in 1956.
