Why might an artist employ the sfumato painting technique?

Sfumato means to tone down and was most notably used by Leonardo da Vinci to gradually change the hue of skin tone in his paintings. One of the most notable effects of sfumato is to subtly blur the edges much like the eye does when it focuses on the center of an image.
