What is the meaning of "Cryptodira," a suborder containing reptiles such as tortoises and turtles?

Cryptodira means "hidden neck" in ancient Greek which is quite fitting for tortoises and turtles. The turtles that cannot withdraw their head are called Pleurodira which means "side neck."
