What are the characteristics of catadromous fish?

They are the opposite of Salmon. Catadromous fish spend their life in fresh water and go out to sea to breed. Several species of eel have catadromous lifestyles. The eel goes through several stages with the first two to three years being at sea. Eventually, they mature and swim upriver where they live for 10 to 15 years before being ready to go back to see to spawn and then die.
