What is the origin of the term, "skid row"?

The area where loggers would skid or slide lumber from water's edge to land was called a skid road. In the U.S. the term was used in the Pacific Northwest in the 1850s. The area around skid road was generally poor, and inhabitants were "on the skids". The term "skid road" has morphed into "skid row" for a very poor area, often an area for the homeless,
