The only non-African country to recognise Biafra as an independent state in 1967 was Haiti.
Biafra declared independence from Nigeria on 30 May 1967, triggering the Nigerian Civil War. Haiti, under the rule of François "Papa Doc" Duvalier, was one of the few countries to formally recognise Biafra, along with four African nations: Gabon, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania and Zambia. Haiti's recognition of Biafra was likely symbolic, as the country had no significant diplomatic or economic ties to the region, but it highlighted Duvalier's interest in asserting Haiti's voice in global affairs.
