These three: Kenneth Williams, Sid James and Hattie Jacques
There was never really a star of the Carry On {series;} instead, it had a kind of repertory company. Names like Kenneth Williams, Sid James and Charles Hawtrey became known in every home, if they weren't already. There was never one overall star - all the regulars, and there were many, shared equal billing and roughly equal on-screen time. Going back to the metaphor of the seaside postcards, we can see close ties between the Carry On team and the characters which populate those {images;} Hattie Jacques, the fat matronly character; Sid James; the dirty-minded father, Charles Hawtrey; the hapless innocent who always ends up on the wrong side of trouble.
A regular stable of actors and actresses appeared in the films. Many of their names became synonymous with 'Carry On,' notably: Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims, Kenneth Connor, Barbara Windsor, Bernard Bresslaw, Peter Butterworth, and Jim Dale. With sadly few exceptions, these actors and actresses have passed away. In total, 30 actual 'Carry On' films were made.
