The boroughs of Manhattan and Staten Island are separate islands. Brooklyn and Queens are both on Long Island. They're all connected to the mainland by bridges. The Bronx is the only borough actually on the mainland.
The Bronx is New York City's northernmost borough, coterminous with Bronx County. The Bronx is located Northeast of Manhattan. It is the only one of the city's five boroughs situated primarily on the United States mainland (the others are on islands).
The Bronx is the ONLY part of New York City physically attached to the North American Continent, and that is debatable because of the Hudson River. All other Boroughs/Counties, Kings, Queens, Richmond and New York (Manhattan) are Islands. Kings and Queens counties are partially divided by waterways.
