Rhubarb certainly seems to be classified as a vegetable, though it is used as a fruit.

Tomatoes are perennial. It is only the cold that kills them.

TheAlphaWolf, since tomatoes are a FRUIT it would be difficult for them to ba a perennial VEGETABLE !

The "apparent" 2 vegetables are RHUBARB and ASPARAGUS according to a radio quiz I heard yesterday.
Anyone have a very specific definition of a vegetable ???

OED doesn't help it say's :-
Fruit - 1. Vegetable products in general that are fit to be eaten as food by man or animals. (now usu. in pl. 2. The edible product of a plant or tree consisting of the seed and it's envelope.
Going back to my biology casses a long while ago - Fruits are one of the methods of plant reproduction (hence all seeds are technically fruits eg Peas and beans, rice etc)
Rhubarb is not a fruit - it's the stem of the plant (and it's first mention in 1650 says it's a fruit substitute), Asparagus (again the stem is picked)- there are others, most herbs are classed as vegetables (you only pick the leaf or stem) ("Try Perennial vegetable" in your search engine for more info)
