Food & Drink Trivia Questions

1. The area where a large group of maple trees grow that are used for syrup production is called a "sugarbush". How old must the trees in the sugarbush be to be tapped for maple syrup making? (Think twoscore)

From Quiz
How Sweet It Is! (Making Maple Syrup)

Answer: At least 40 years old

The farmers make wood roads into the forest where there is the heaviest concentration of mature sugar maple trees. Other species are cleared out to make more room for the maples to grow. Trees must be at least 40 years old to be used without damaging the tree.

2. Which Western state claims the potato as its official state vegetable?

From Quiz Official State Foods, 2nd Serving

Answer: Idaho

The potato is an ancient New World food, introduced to Europe in 1500s. The word "potato" derives from Spanish word "patata" which derives from the Nahuatl word "potatl". The average American consumes 140 pounds of potatoes per year. Idaho farmers grow a lot of potatoes, which became the state vegetable in 2002.

3. A little something sweet ends a meal on the proper note. What is the state dessert of Alabama?

From Quiz Official State Foods, 1st Serving

Answer: Lane Cake

In 1898, Emma Rylander Lane entered a cake in a baking competition which went on to become the state dessert of Alabama in 2016. The cake is soaked in bourbon. The cake is mentioned in Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" where Scout eats a piece and feels the effects of the alcohol.

4. In a tomb in which ancient country have the oldest remains of honey been found?

From Quiz I Love You, Honey

Answer: Georgia

Mankind has been collecting honey as a food source for thousands of years. A cave painting found in Valencia, Spain, which has been dated back as far as 8,000 years, attests to this fact, although I think they've made the painting fit the theory more than anything else. The bees in the painting could just as easily be birds. A more definite piece of evidence for this theory was verified at an ancient tomb which was located in the country of Georgia. There, they found jars with the remains of honey still inside - and have dated this find back some 6,000 years.

5. The Caprese Salad is an Italian salad with mozzarella cheese, basil, olive oil and salt. What else is added to the salad?

From Quiz Tomato or Chocolate?

Answer: Tomato

The Caprese salad has the colors of the Italian flag: green (basil), white (mozzarella cheese) and red (tomatoes). Salt and olive oil are also added for taste. Balsamic vinegar can also be mixed with the salad, in addition to many other dressings. The olive oil boosts the tomato's power to make you happy.

6. Reportedly good for improving night vision, large amounts of this food are more likely to give your skin a golden glow. What medicinal food is this?

From Quiz We Have a Pill for That!

Answer: Carrot

Take yourself back to the Second World War and the Battle of Britain. The British were achieving success in shooting down enemy aircraft during night raids. How? The story promoted at the time was that eating carrots enhanced night vision, however this was a deception intended to mislead. The real reasons for the gunnery success were the use of radar and of red lights on instrument panels, which helped pilots retain their night vision. All the foods listed above contain organic pigments known as carotenes, some of which are partly metabolised by the body into vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for healthy vision, amongst other things, and night blindness is one of the first symptoms of a deficiency in vitamin A. So in that sense, these foods are important for night vision. The orange colour of the carrot is mostly due to beta-carotene and eating large amounts can give your skin an orange tinge. Other foods rich in beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and plums. So eating your fruit and veg can not just make you feel healthy but also look healthy. A better alternative than the tanning salon?

7. What is often added, in a very small quantity, to the water when preparing poached eggs?

From Quiz What's Cooking?

Answer: vinegar

Poached eggs can be poached to taste. Take the egg out of the water sooner for a soft and runny yolk and leave it in longer for a hard yolk.

8. This traditional Jewish dish typically involves "dumplings" made of schmaltz, among other things.

From Quiz Food for Thought: Trivia for Foodies

Answer: Matzah ball soup

Matzah balls are placed in steeped chicken stock to cook the dough. They are served in the broth they were cooked in. Depending on the skill of the cook and density of the balls, some will "sink" and others will "float" in their broth.

9. Is an M16 Carbine meat sandwich what you fancy? What about a vegetarian side called a "Terrorist Meal". If you answered yes, you can come on down to Buns and Guns Restaurant in which Middle Eastern city, devastated by a war in 2006?

From Quiz The Joy of Not Cooking!

Answer: Beirut, Lebanon

Everything is military-themed inside the restaurant, and patrons can listen to the sound of helicopters in the background while eating their meal. The restaurant's manager Yussaf Ibrahim says that his eatery tries to reflect the mood of the Lebanon capital during the 2006 war with neighboring Israel in which Beirut was leveled by Israeli bombings. Take caution however, a poster at the front of the restaurant simply states the company slogan that "Sandwiches Can Kill You".

10. What kind of lettuce is usually used in a Caesar salad?

From Quiz You, Me, and the Croutons

Answer: Romaine

Named after its creator Caesar Cardini, a Caesar salad is a wonderful mixture of romaine lettuce and croutons. The dressing, which is mixed in as opposed to poured on, is a delightful mixture of olive oil, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, egg, black pepper with a touch of Worcestershire sauce. As with any salad, variations are limitless, but romaine lettuce is a must.

11. Most of the meat from this amphibian comes from the legs. In France they're called cuisses de grenouilles. What are they called in the U.S.?

From Quiz Do You Expect Me To Eat That?

Answer: Frogs' legs

I have sampled frogs' legs and yes, they do taste like chicken. During the Middle Ages, on days they could only eat fish, European Catholics would eat frog and beaver meat. Apparently, if it swam in the water it could be eaten. Frogs' legs are considered a delicacy of many countries besides France. They're eaten in Asia, Portugal, and regions of Greece. They're also enjoyed in the southern regions of the U.S. which is where I sampled it.

12. Allium is the term used for a group of plants usually referred to as the onion genus. Originally though, Allium was the Latin word for which specific aromatic food?

From Quiz The Omnipresent Onion

Answer: Garlic

Members of this family of plants include onions, shallots, leeks, scallions, garlic and chives. Some other plants belonging to this family are used for ornamental purposes as well, coming in a wide variety of shapes and colours, and producing pretty little flowers. Amazingly so, there are about 750 plants belonging under the Allium classification. These either grow from bulbs or from seeds.

13. Oregano: We've all heard of it, even those that don't cook. Where does oregano, the spice we cook with, originally come from (hint: this is not the same country in which it became most famous later)?

From Quiz The Origin of Spices

Answer: Greece

This is a distinctly Mediterranean spice, grown and used first in Greece but quickly spread to Italy. Oregano became known as the tomato spice because it blends so well with tomato sauces. 20. Welsh Rarebit, which essentially consists of melted cheese on toast, was originally known by which misleading name?

From Quiz Culinary Misnomers

Answer: Welsh Rabbit

The earliest record of this dish was in 1725, when it was known as Welsh Rabbit, despite the fact that the recipe doesn't call for any meat whatsoever. The potential for confusion may explain why the name transformed into Welsh Rarebit around 1785, but that still didn't educate people on what they were eating. Variations abound, but this savory treat generally calls for cheddar cheese to be mixed with mustard, cayenne pepper, beer (or ale) and Worcestershire sauce, and melted over toast. So why was it called "Rabbit" in the first place? The true origins of the name Welsh Rabbit are unknown, but it may have reflected the relative affluence of the denizens of the Kingdom of Great Britain at the time. In those days, only the well to do could afford to eat beef or mutton on a regular basis. Even amongst the have-nots, the Welsh were generally worse off than their English counterparts, so while the poor in England had to make do with poultry or rabbit when they could get it, in Wales the poor-man's meat was cheese. The name was accordingly a joke at the expense of the Welsh, implying that they were so poor that they ate cheese and pretended it was rabbit. As there is no evidence that this dish originated from Wales, another possible explanation of the name is that it exemplified the tendency at the time for the English to describe items of inferior quality as provincial versions of the genuine article. Similarly, the Scotch Woodcock isn't made from a game bird, but is actually scrambled eggs and anchovy meat or paste on toast.

From Quiz Kitchen History

Answer: Cuba Libre

The longdrink referred to is of course the Cuba Libre ("Free Cuba"). José Marti (1853-1895) was one of the leaders of the rebellion against the Spanish colonial power on Cuba. He started the rebellion on January 29th, 1895. (In this context "Cuba libre" has nothing to do with Castro's Cuba or with attempts to overthrow him). Dolores Ibaruzzi, alias La Pasionaria, was a Spanish communist. She exclaimed "No Pasaran!" ("They shall not pass!") on July 18th, 1936, as the Fascist troops of General Franco approached Madrid. Pope Urban II (1042-1099) ended a famous speech in 1095 with the words "Deus le volt" ("God wants it"). In this speech, he sought for volunteers for the First Crusade. Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1928) was an Italian teacher and poet. He wanted to achieve great victories for Italy, so he occupied the Yugoslav city of Fiume (Rjeka) after WWI. Later on, he would have exclaimed "Me ne frego" (which can be translated politely as "I don't give a damn!" - the original is a bit more crude) when the Italian government required him to retreat.
