According to the paper today this is the reason:

For his first singing engagement in a Memphis church, he wanted to look smart, so he wore black, simply because he knew where to buy cheap black shirts for two pounds each. Black became his signature. He wore it next at the Grand Ol' Opry in Nashville, the home of Country music, when everyone else was wearing rhinestones. "I wanted them to focus on my music, not my clothes," he said.

I wore black because I liked it. I still do, and wearing it still means something to me. It's still my symbol of rebellion - against a stagnant status quo, against our hypocritical houses of God, against people whose minds are closed to others' ideas.

According to a poem/song Johnny wrote--paraphrased-- he wore black for the poor and the beaten down, the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, for those who never read or listened to the words that Jesus said. For the sick and lonely, in mournin' for the lives that could have been. For the thousands who have died, believen' that the Lord was on their side. I'd love to wear a rainbow every day, and tell the world that everything's OK, but I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, Til things are brighter, I'm the Man in Black.

So eight years after the last reply, I found this post. And this us what I truly believe the answer to be.
Johnny Cash wore black for people, for his religion, and for his message. He wore it so people wouldn't focus on what he wore, but what was impoGrant, his music and the underlying message that was in each song.
I hope this helps and makes sence. Goodbye, and may Johnny rest in peace with June in Heaven.

My references are the song "Man in Black" by Johnny Cash, a knowledge of his music, religion, and an understanding of what his message was.
