Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Johnny Cash's common nickname?

Answer: The Man in Black

He and his band wore black because it was their only matching color they had in their outfits. But a song of his, "Man in Black", explained better why black was his color. Some lyrics tell a good reason: "I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,/Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,/I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,/" and "I wear it for the sick and lonely old,/For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,/
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,/
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men."

He since became known as the man in black, both on and off stage.
2. What is Johnny Cash's birth name and when was his birthday?

Answer: J.R. Cash, February 26, 1932

He was born in Kingsland, Arkansas and his hometown was Dyess, Arkansas. He died September 12, 2003 at age 71.
3. Why did Johnny Cash quit using drugs?

Answer: He had a spiritual epiphany and rediscovered his Christian faith

He had his epiphany after a drug overdose in 1967 in Nickajack Cave, and then took an altar call and joined a small church around Nashville. The church was called Evangel Temple.
4. His band, The Highwaymen, included Kris Kristofferson.

Answer: True

The band also consisted of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson! A very interesting group of friends and outlaws, altogether legends, with or without each other.
5. Johnny Cash was friends with:

Answer: All of these people

He was friends with every president since Richard Nixon (except the two most recent, Bill Clinton and George Bush due to a distrust and Johnny's health problems), especially Jimmy Carter. After a serious abdominal injury in 1983 because of a strange accident in which he was kicked and seriously wounded by an ostrich he kept on his farm, he was given painkillers.

This led to substance abuse again. During his recovery at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1986, he met and became friends with Ozzy Osbourne, one of his son's favorite singers. On December 4, 1956, Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins were in the studio when Elvis came in.

They began a jam session while the tapes were left running and the recordings, about half of them gospel songs, survived and have been released on a CD named "Million Dollar Quartet".
6. What was Cash's first book?

Answer: Man in Black

"Man in Black" and "Cash: The Autobiography" were both autobios, the second obviously so. "Man in White" was his only novel, focusing on Saul and his conversion to Apostle Paul (which kind of related to Cash's own spiritual coming). "The Rebel", as far as I know, is not a book written by Johnny Cash.
7. Johnny Cash has had over 130 hit songs on the Billboard Country Charts.

Answer: True

He was and stil is a popular artist, having lots of well-known songs. "The Ring of Fire", "A Boy Named Sue", and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" are just a few. A notable posthumous hit was called "Hurt".
8. What was Cash's first album to be recognized by the Billboard?

Answer: Johnny Cash with his Hot and Blue Guitar

The albums from oldest to most recent are: (from the three incorrect choices) "The Fabulous Johnny Cash" (1958), "The Sound of Johnny Cash" (1962), and "The Unissued Johnny Cash" (1978). "Johnny Cash with his Hot and Blue Guitar" was released in 1956.
9. Which of these major Hall of Fames was Johnny Cash inducted into?

Answer: All three

Yes, he had the rare honor of being a part of all three Halls of Fame. He shares this feat with only two other performers: Hank Williams Sr. and Jimmie Rodgers. Cash stated that his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame was his greatest professional acheivement.
10. Complete this title of one of Cash's best known songs: "Folsom Prison _____".

Answer: Blues

One of his most famous songs, Folsom Prison Blues, inspired two popular albums: "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" (1968) and "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" (1969). Cash had a great interest for prisoners and their lives, and played many concerts at varius prisons. What led him to write "Folsom Prison Blues" was the B-movie he saw while in West Germany, "Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison" (1951)
