The NBA assigns three referees to officiate 10 players, having added a third ref to their crews in 1988-89. For decades the NHL assigned one referee and two linesmen to each game; with the addition this season of a second referee for all regular season and playoff games, there are now four on-ice officials to watch 12 players. The NFL stations seven-man crews on the field to observe 22 players, and MLB puts an umpire at each of the four bases to govern the play of 10-13 players, depending on how many runners are on base.
