Why do people eat a lime or lemon after drinking tequila?

Both of those things tend to be associated with tequila shots. Actually I should say bad tequila because you wouldn't want to chase a top shelf tequila with a lime. But for the younger crowd that tends to do shots of Cuervo Gold and the like, a lime after the shot helps to cleanse away the nastiness of a low quality spirit. As for salt, this also helps to mask the flavor of the
liquor, although on a good margarita it's a nice contrast to the tartness of the drink and helps to enhance the flavor.
