Interesting discussion with regards to this question:

DC2NY: "BTW, Blinders On, do you know what border constitutes the Mason-Dixon line? MD/Penn... MD was a Confederate state. That was 140 years ago, so the only real point to that is that you may not be as educated as you think."

Blinders On: "Actually, DC2NY, please consult your history books. Maryland was NOT a Confederate state, regardless of where the Mason-Dixie Line is located (and you are correct as to where it is located.) Maryland never declared secession from the Union (as well as Missouri and Kentucky, all of which were slave states and who did not secede from the Union.) Maryland's population was heavy with Confederate sympathizers, as was MO, KY and even Pennsylvania. Pres. Lincoln placed Baltimore under martial law for most of the Civil War because of its anti-Union rioting and sentiment in that city - Baltimore was a major slave trade port and slavery existed legally in Maryland even after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued which freed slaves only in states and territories in rebellion against the United States - Maryland was not in rebellion."

Maryland didn't secede, but it might have done so had the federal government not taken various precautions against the possibility. The state contained many people sympathetic to the Confederate cause.

It's interesting when I learned about the Civil war in school, because I live in Maryland. We all grow up thinking we're the "north", but we learn about plantation life, and we had a lot of slaves. We were a split state, though.

Maryland was and is a southern state. It is the only state to have official military units in both armies. Maryland paid pensions to both its southern and northern soldiers. Maryland was already being occupied before the war even started.

Lincoln suspended the writ of habeus corpus in Maryland and had key people arrested and locked in FT McHenry. When Maryland voted on secession it lacked the votes because of the fact a couple of Representatives were conveniently missing.

The first bloodshed of the war was on Pratt St. in Baltimore. Gen. Lee invaded Maryland in 1862 in part to try and free her from the occupation. As the war drug on Maryland's attitude gradually shifted to the north. Maryland was not a confederate state because it never had the chance. It is however a state that contributed a lot to the Southern cause.
