In the film, Mitchum drove a hot-rodded 1950 Ford coupe with a custom tank in the back for moonshine.

There were two Fords in the movie. A 1951 Ford Custom (originally black repainted gray later in the movie) and a 1957 Ford Fairlane. It will be difficult to find out the colour of the 1957 car because the movie was in black and white. There is a newspaper picture of it here but it is also in black and white.

1957 Ford Fairlane ... Regarding color… No dialogue cues to help us out here. However, the car detectives on the Jalopy Journal message boards have shared their takes, with strong evidence suggesting that a two-tone color combination of “Cumberland Green” and “Willow Green”.

I am not finding the color but this might help someone do just that. Info on the crashed car taken from Thunder Road Transcript.

His name is Lucas Doolin.
He drives a new Ford.
Tennessee licence 5J-6389.
It's a car for moonshine liquor and he's coming into Memphis tonight.

I strongly believe it was Cumberland Green with Willow Green two tone. I have tried for many years to definitively answer this question using my experience as a photographer, but given the differences in films used it has been almost impossible for me at least. Now I have used a screen shot of the car's upholstery from the film compared to original upholstery swatches to draw a conclusion because only one of the combinations available for the Fairlane 500 Club Sedan matches in contrast.
