Which did Tolkien write first, 'The Hobbit' or 'The Lord of the Rings'?

The Hobbit was the first offered for publication -- but even parts of the Silmarillion antedate The Hobbit!

The Hobbit was first published in 1937. The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in 1954.

He apparently wrote all three at Pembroke College Oxford, from 1925 onwards. It may be hard to prove which he wrote at what time, the big delay between the books was due to the publishers.
