Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many dwarves went on the adventure?

Answer: 13

Bilbo was chosen because he was the lucky number. Thorin Oakenshield, Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bombur, Bofur, Óin, Glóin, Dori, Ori and Nori were the thirteen dwarves. Count 'em!
2. Bilbo was only half Baggins; his more adventurous side was:

Answer: Took

His mother was Beladonna Took, and to her side he attributed going out on the adventure.
3. What was the name of the Dragon?

Answer: Smaug

Smaug the Magificent, the last of the brood of Ancalagon the Black. He is one of four dragons to be named in the works of Tolkien relating to the Middle Earth.
4. Thorin and Gandalf got their swords, Orcrist and Glamdring, from whom?

Answer: the trolls

The trolls must have plundered them from two of their victims, but probably had no idea as to the worth of these swords. They were swords that had originated in Gondolin, were well known in the elven-community, and well-feared in the Orc sects. Their nicknames amongst the Goblins were 'Beater' and 'Biter' respectively.
5. Who did Bilbo meet under the Misty Mountains?

Answer: Gollum

Gollum lived on a rock in the middle of a lake under the Misty Mountains. Bilbo found him when he got separated from the dwarves during a fight with the goblins. Gollum was in possession of the Ring,, but had just (unknowingly) lost it to Bilbo.
6. What are Wargs?

Answer: wolves

Orcs and Wargs often work together. Slain wolves disappear with the dawning of the new day. Wargs are extremely intelligent wolves who inhabit the Misty Mountains and harass Bilbo and his party as they come out of the Goblin-lair. According to Tolkien, Wargs are very flammable.
7. Where does Beorn live?

Answer: near the Carrock

Beorn is mistakenly called a 'furrier' by Bilbo, but, actually, he's a shape-shifter and can take on the form of a bear at will. He sets the party on its way into Mirkwood. At the end of "The Hobbit", Beorn is the one who saves the mortally-wounded Thorin from the vanguard of Bolg and carries him to die in peace with his friends and kin.
8. What does Bilbo name his short-sword?

Answer: Sting

After fighting the spiders, Bilbo decided that he too had a sting. This was also an elven-blade, and would glow bright blue when orcs were near. Although this was considered only a short sword, it was well suited to someone of Bilbo's stature.
9. The only dwarf not caught by the spiders was

Answer: Thorin

Thorin was caught by the wood-elves first, and imprisoned in the dungeon. He was soon joined in prison by the rest of the dwarves after they got away from the spiders.
10. Thorin was in search of something specific from Smaug's hoard:

Answer: Arkenstone

The Arkenstone, the heart of the mountain, was the gem that Thorin longed for. It had been uncovered in the time of Thráin I, probably with much influence from his Dwarven-ring, and was worked by the dwarves of Erebor into a magnificent jewel.
11. What did Bilbo steal that enraged the Dragon?

Answer: a golden goblet

A dragon, as a rule, knows every item in his hoard, and its value, even though he will never make any use of it. The great cup of Thror was a minor treasure, but a great insult to Smaug when it was taken.
12. Who killed the Dragon?

Answer: Bard

Bard used his lucky black arrow, and shot Smaug in the bare patch on his left breast. The thrush revealed the weak spot in Smaug's armour.
13. Which bird showed the dwarves the key-hole, and told where to shoot the Dragon to the Lake-men?

Answer: a thrush

The lake-men could talk with the thrush, whereas the dwarves talked with the crow (Roäc).
14. What did Thorin first give Bilbo as 'payment for his services'?

Answer: a mail coat

The mail-coat, made of mithril, was worth more than all of the Shire put together. Bilbo knows this, but passes the mail-coat on to Frodo, and Frodo doesn't really realize what he's wearing until after Moria.
15. Who was the leader of the dwarves of the Iron Hills?

Answer: Dain

Dáin Ironfoot, son of Náin, of the red axe, killed Azog in the battle of Moria, Azog being the father of Bolg the goblin leader. Dáin would not enter Moria, and went instead to become leader of the dwarves of the Iron Hills.
16. Name the leader of the goblin horde:

Answer: Bolg

Bolg, son of Azog... see the remark about Dain. It was Bolg who mortally wounded Thorin in the Battle of the Five Armies.
17. Bilbo's last words in the Battle of the Five Armies:

Answer: 'the eagles'

Then he was hit by a stone and was unconscious for the rest of the battle.
18. Who tried to save Thorin in the final battle?

Answer: Beorn

Beorn came suddenly, in bear-form, and saved Thorin's hurt body from the goblins. Alas, his wounds were mortal.
19. How many of the dwarves from Thorin's company survived to the end of the book?

Answer: 10

Fili and Kili died defending Thorin, and Thorin too was killed.
20. Which dwarf comes to visit Bilbo at the end of the story?

Answer: Balin

Balin comes with Gandalf for a visit. He tells of the progress in Erebor, and of the other dwarves, but does not tell of his own desire to retake Moria.
