What is the difference between an island and an islet, and how large must an islet be to be renamed an island? Are there actually islets (or cays/keys) that are larger than islands?

An islet is made of rock, no or minimal vegetation, and unhabited. The size varies from area to area, or person to person. So, technically it is possible that an islet is bigger than an island. But the islet and island would not be near each other.
An island is any piece of land smaller than a continent and larger than a rock that is completely surrounded by water. Very small islands--say, islands smaller than necessary for any useful purpose, but still larger than rocks--are called islets.
