God and Lord are used to translate the terms used for the deity from different original sources. There are four recognised - J, E and P, and the fourth D which is only in Deuteronomy. P is the priestly source which is concerned with priestly matters - and sounds a bit jobsworth at times. J is a more primitive source, which tends to dramatise events rather than count the beans. The E source used to also contain the P source, and refers to God as Elohim, where the J source uses Yahweh (Jahweh in German). There are spots where there are conflicts between the sources - notably the Creation and the Flood - and bits also where the P source couldn't avoid using primitive terms because, presumably, they were traditional. (Possibly including using the plural elohim meaning gods rather than God in the singular.) The fundamentalists tend to avoid the work of the Biblical scholars that delve into the original sources, as hard to explain things tend to crawl out of the woodwork..... See link http://faculty.gvsu.edu/websterm/Genesis.htm or Isaac Asimov's 'In the Beginning' for interesting insights into this area.
