Ballet Rehearsal on Stage

Showing a contrast with Degas' more common use of bright colors, "Ballet Rehearsal on Stage" is a monochrome painting. That doesn't make it any less striking. In fact, the use of dark and light coloring seems to create a three-dimensional effect that more conventional colored paintings lack.

Nonetheless, the painting fits in well with Degas' other ballet works, for which he is well known. Behind the ballerinas, it would be easy for one to miss the figure dressed in black, seated on a chair: the ballet instructor.
