The Kiss

By Gustav Klimt

Painting Information
If one were to see the "The Kiss" and think it were made out of gold, they would be partially correct. Klimt, the son of a gold engraver, used silver and gold leaf frequently in his paintings. Klimt attributes his taste for using gold leaf to observing Byzantine mosaics (and their flatness) and seeing how their own use of gold leaf magnified their brilliance.

The erotic nature of many of Klimt's other works led to his castigation by the political elites of Austria, though "The Kiss" was received with enthusiasm and even purchased by the Austrian government.
