Subject: The Official Share a Story Thread

Posted by: Terry
Date: Aug 24 12

If you are directed here by a FunTrivia challenge, please reply ONLY in this thread for the challenge. Only posts made here will count towards your challenge!

[ And no, you will be DIRECTED to come here. Posting here without having an already issued challenge will not result in anything! Still, you can post a story if you feel like it anyway ;) ]

If sent here, the title says it all. Your challenge is to share a story.

Tell us, briefly, about something funny or interesting that has happened to you recently. Or something sad. Or something scary. Or something exciting. Something funny or strange you saw?

If nothing funny or interesting or scary or exciting has happened, then write us a poem. Or a song. Or tell us a joke.

Or just tell us what you did today. Did all you accomplish was to brush your teeth? Did you fail to even do that? Do share...

Feeling grumpy today? Tell us what irritates you. What TV show can't you stand? What TV show are you watching that you like?

So go ahead, we're listening. The only rules are that you be polite and follow our very simple rules up above.

Tell us a story...

Congrats on the new job, Queenly1!!!! What is it? When do you start? Be careful about wearing yourself out. Your body is not going to be used to the sudden uptick in working more hours so make sure you get enough rest and proper nutrition the first few weeks until you acclimate.

Mike, I'm jealous! I've wanted to visit Florence and the Uffizi galleries ever since I first learned of them. Are you going to post a travelogue for us like when you went to Spain for a conference? You are a wonderful travel writer.

Congratulations on your new job Queenly. Never give up I say.

Mira Jane. I don't know what the law says in the US, but I remember from studying a bit of it in the UK, that a neighbour is entitled to cut any parts of plants or bushes that hang over their side of the fence provided they give the cuttings back to you. Strange but true, from the days when wood was valuable as fuel i suppose but that's still the law today. Anyway, could that be why your neighbour dumped cuttings in your garden I wonder. Did they confine themselves to cutting just what hung over their fence or did they damage plants on your side too?

Flopsy, One of our neighbours has a massive fast growing leylandii blocking much of the sky and light and almost twice as high as the houses. Many neighbours are not happy. We have the same type of soil and subsidence risks as you describe in your post. The occupant of the house is a tenant of the council. The council agrees it would be best if it was reduced at least, but says it's up to the tenant and they don't want it touched. One problem is that there is no access to get any cut branches out except through the house and neither the tenant nor the council want it out that way. Because I've got in touch with the council, they asked ME if there was any alternative access. I found they neighbour next to tree neighbour does have side access on their property and council man now wants me to talk to that neighbour about letting tree neighbours cuttings go out that way, so that he (council man) can try to persuade tree neighbour to change their mind about tree reduction.
What a palaver!. I expect everyone's asleep by now reading this.

In this hot weather the number of ants in the garden seems to have vastly multiplied. We used only to have red ants which bite or sting but don't come into the house. Now we have black ants. I'm not sure whether they are in addition or have replaced the red ants. Black ants don't bit or sting but they tend to crawl all over the plants and it's easy to bring them into the house by accidental contact. We found some in our fruit bowl and went frantic getting rid of them all and spraying a barrier spray. The kept reappearing from nowhere seemingly and they signal to their fellow ants to come and join them. Eventually we managed to get them all and they haven't come back so far though I found one crawling on my arm the other day after I'd come in from working in the garden. I hope they never get into to house in any significant numbers. Not long ago we went for a break somewhere and had to change hotel rooms because there were ants coming in the ventilator in the bathroom.

It's remindedme of another story. Some years ago my parents-in-law bought a time share in a property in Spain for Summer holiday use. They were told they were 'prize winners' and had therefore got it at a special reduced price. When they arrived there one of their neighbours was out in his front garden. They said hello and then proudly told him they were prize winners. 'We're all prize winners here, dear' was his scathing reply. Those were the days when people were still innocent about those scams. Anyway we never remembered the neighbour's name but we used to call him 'Mr Bugs', not to his face of course, because he seemed to have an obsession with lines of ants who liked to march through his property. I expect the time shares were built on their traditional routes and no one had asked them.

Mix, she cut down six trees on my property & had the trunks cut up and dumped in my backyard. She dug up my rose bushes & planted them in my yard. None of the trees hung over her yard. The rose bushes did not hang over her yard.

I am very much into the paranormal. I grew up in a 200 year old house. It was awesome.

A neighbour is having an extension built. It's on a house they bought and they may not be living in yet. I guess they are not because the heavy machinery and drilling noises carry on all day all week except Sundays but including Saturdays up to 7.p.m. It really stops other neighbours enjoying peaceful time in their gardens when they are not at work. We don't get many Summers like this, but you can't enjoy sitting out with that noise. It's not even as though it's unusual. Every year one of the neighbours decides to do building work in the Summer.

Yep France v Argentina was an impressive game. Uruguay beat Portugal ( another 2 great teams) and now France and Uruguay will play each other in the next round which seems a shame as they may be the two best teams in the competition but one will have to go out in the next round.

MiraJane, my new job is as a Bookseller in a bookstore; I'm looking forward to it, but am also a bit nervous, for the reasons you mentioned. I'm no kid any more, and I suspect I'll be working strange hours, and between that and my other job, I may be working six or even seven days a week at first. I'll find out more when I attend my orientation session on Tuesday. I continue to work at the library where I've been working for years, but joined the rank of the under-employed when I and many other employees' hours were arbitrarily cut. That is why I needed a second job. I worry about my stamina, too, but I need a second job in order to earn a living. Thank you very much for your interest, your good advice, and your kind words! I'm so sorry that you continue to be troubled by your arrogant and annoying neighbor. I very much hope that things improve for you. Take care! Sincerely, TheQueenly1

Mixamatosis, Thank you also for your kindness and encouragement. It has meant a lot to me. I'm so sorry that you, too, have been inconvenienced by, and are still suffering from, the boorish behavior of thoughtless and inconsiderate neighbors, and having to go through red tape and rules with the council, just to protect your own property, must be frustrating indeed. I hope things improve for you soon. Take care! Sincerely, TheQueenly1

Thank you The Queenly. I am retired now but if I was to take up a job in retirement, working in a book shop would be my dream job. It's hard to get jobs in bookshops here without having a degree in English. Congratulations! I hope you enjoy this new job. The only downside seems to be the hours but I hope the hours between your 2 jobs are manageable.

If you would like to listen to something beautiful check out the youtube clip of Andy Williams singing "Are You Going To Scarborough Fair" with Simon & Garfunkel. It will bring tears to your eyes.
